Softer than satin was the lie

2019

Master of Fine Art (RMIT) graduation work.

Satin, cotton drill, latex gloves, synthetic stuffing, sequins, beads, metal eyelets, steel rod, metal chain, plastic rings, video (infinite loop), audio (infinite loop), laptop, portable speaker, cotton sweatshirt, pedestal fan, sibling.

A dreamscape (of the office), just under the meniscus of sleep – a weird zone of possibility and horror. Blue satin curtains riddled with perverted latex appendages are blown softly by a pedestal fan, lit by the video’s eerie blue light – it’s like being in the inside of a film set, or the inside of someone’s unconscious. Maybe it feels relaxing, maybe it’s too intimate. The room expands and retracts with the recorded human groans, as the performer lays out in their recumbency. Things are not okay, yet everything is fine.
